Hi,

My name is Gayle, when I started Sensory Store, I knew I wanted to create something that made choosing toys for babies easier.

But I also knew I didn't want to contribute to the endless cycle of buying more, having more and throwing more away.

As a mum myself, I'm very conscious of what we bring into our home. Babies don't need a room full of toys to learn and develop. They need the right opportunities to explore, move, touch, listen, discover and play.

And for me, those toys should have a purpose.

They should be well made. They should be safe. They should ideally last long enough to be passed on. And I think about what happens to everything around the toy too — from the box it arrives in to the packaging it comes wrapped in.

That's why being more environmentally conscious isn't something we've added to Sensory Store as a marketing tick box. It's something that's genuinely important to me as a founder and as a mum.

What does eco-friendly mean at Sensory Store?

For me, being more eco-conscious is about making better choices wherever we can.

We choose our products carefully. We think about the materials they're made from. We think about how long they'll last. We think about the packaging they arrive in and the packaging we send them out in.

And perhaps most importantly, we want the things we sell to have a life beyond baby.

Our PlayKits are designed around specific developmental stages, so the toys are chosen with the skills babies are working on at that particular age. But that doesn't mean they're single-use toys that are suddenly irrelevant once your baby moves on to the next stage.

In fact, many of our toys continue to be enjoyed for years.

My own daughters still love playing with the Sensory Store toys, despite being well beyond the baby stages. And from the 5-6 month PlayKit onwards, many of the toys can be enjoyed alongside toys from the following stages, allowing you to build your collection rather than constantly replace it.

That's really important to me.

FSC-certified wooden toys

All of the wooden toys currently included in our PlayKits are made using FSC-certified wood.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is an internationally recognised system designed to promote responsible management of forests.

For us, choosing FSC-certified wooden toys is one of the ways we can make a more considered choice about the materials we're bringing into your home.

And I love that wooden toys can be enjoyed again and again.

They're not designed to be used for a few months before being forgotten about. They can be passed from baby to baby, from sibling to sibling, or from one family to another.

They can become the toy that ends up in the bottom of the toy box and somehow gets rediscovered five years later!

Non-toxic paints and finishes

Our wooden toys use non-toxic paints, because safety is always the starting point when we're choosing products for babies and young children.

Babies explore their world with their hands, their mouths and their whole bodies, so choosing toys with appropriate materials and finishes matters.

Of course, you should always follow the manufacturer's age guidance and care instructions for individual toys, particularly with babies who are still exploring everything by putting it in their mouths.

What happens to all the packaging?

This is something I'm particularly conscious of.

When your Sensory Store PlayKit arrives, I want you to be able to look at the packaging and know exactly what you're going to do with it.

Wherever possible, our internal packaging is paper or cardboard, rather than unnecessary plastic.

We also use expandable cardboard-style protective packaging around our products, rather than adding layers of plastic just for the sake of presentation.

Even our outer postal bags have been chosen with this in mind. They are labelled biodegradable, with information on the packaging about their disposal and biodegradability.

Because I don't think sustainability should stop at the product itself.

If we're sending a beautiful wooden toy into your home, I want to think about what happens to the box, paper and packaging that comes with it too.

Less plastic. Less clutter. More purposeful play.

There's another side to sustainability that I think gets overlooked when we talk about baby toys.

It's not just about what a toy is made from.

It's also about how many toys we actually need.

We've all seen them — the huge plastic toys with flashing lights, endless buttons, songs and batteries that seem to take over the sitting room. They're designed to grab attention, but they don't necessarily give babies the opportunity to explore at their own pace.

That's not what we're about at Sensory Store.

We believe in purposeful play.

Every toy in our PlayKits has been selected for a reason. We want babies to be able to explore, discover and practise emerging skills through play, rather than simply being entertained or distracted.

A wooden toy doesn't need to flash, beep or sing to be interesting.

Sometimes a simple shape in a baby's hand is enough to spark a whole new discovery.

Toys that grow with your child

Our PlayKits are designed around specific developmental stages, so the toys in each kit have a purpose for that particular age.

For example, our earliest kits focus heavily on those very first sensory experiences — looking, tracking, reaching and beginning to engage with the world around them.

As babies grow, the toys become more interactive and increasingly support things like grasping, transferring objects, cause and effect, problem-solving and movement.

From around the 5-6 month stage onwards, many of our toys can easily be used alongside toys from the next PlayKit.

So instead of replacing everything every couple of months, you can gradually build a collection of purposeful toys that your baby can continue to explore in different ways.

And then there's our Music PlayKit, which is designed to be enjoyed from around six months right through to five years.

That's exactly the kind of longevity I want to see in the products we sell.

A little less stuff can be a good thing

One of the reasons I created Sensory Store was because I know how overwhelming it can be trying to choose what your baby actually needs.

There are so many toys marketed to new parents.

And it's very easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the more toys your baby has, the more they're going to learn.

But babies don't need hundreds of toys.

They need opportunities to explore.

They need repetition.

They need time.

And they need you.

A smaller selection of thoughtfully chosen toys can provide plenty of opportunities for play, particularly when you rotate them and give your baby time to really explore them.

That's why our motto is:

The right toys. At the right time.

Why sustainability matters to me personally

This isn't something I've suddenly become conscious of since starting Sensory Store.

It's the way I was raised.

I grew up with a huge respect for the earth and for the plants and animals that share it with us. It's something I've carried into adulthood and something I want to pass on to my own children.

If you ever see me out walking — whether that's along the shore, through the woods or just out and about — there's a very good chance I won't come home with an empty hand.

I'll nearly always have picked up some rubbish along the way.

A bottle. A piece of plastic. An old wrapper. Whatever happens to be there.

Not because I think I can single-handedly fix the world's environmental problems, but because I genuinely struggle to walk past it.

I think about the world we're leaving behind for the next generation.

And that's something I think about when I'm choosing products for Sensory Store too.

I want to build a business that I'm proud of, but I also want to be conscious of the footprint that business leaves behind.

That means thinking about the toys.

Thinking about the packaging.

Thinking about what happens when a baby outgrows something.

And thinking about whether what we're selling has a genuine purpose in the first place.

Eco-conscious doesn't have to mean perfect

I'm also very conscious that being more environmentally friendly isn't an all-or-nothing thing.

We're a small Irish business. We don't have complete control over every material used in every product or every part of the supply chain.

But we can make better choices where we can.

We can choose FSC-certified wooden toys.

We can choose non-toxic paints.

We can reduce unnecessary plastic packaging.

We can use recyclable paper and cardboard wherever possible.

We can choose biodegradable postal bags.

We can encourage toys to be passed on rather than thrown away.

And we can create PlayKits where the emphasis isn't on having more toys, but on having the right toys for the stage your baby is at.

For me, that's what being more eco-conscious at Sensory Store really means.

It's about being thoughtful.

Play that has a purpose

Ultimately, I want Sensory Store to be about much more than selling baby toys.

I want to help parents feel confident about play.

I want to take away some of the guesswork around what babies actually need at each stage.

And I want the products we sell to be things that families can enjoy, keep, pass on and love — rather than things that are used for five minutes and forgotten about.

Because play doesn't need to be complicated.

It doesn't need to be loud.

It doesn't need batteries.

And it certainly doesn't need to fill your house from floor to ceiling.

Sometimes, the simplest toys offer the biggest opportunities for discovery.

Thoughtful toys. Purposeful play. Less guesswork. And a little more consideration for the world we're leaving behind.
